I was first licensed in 1986 as KA8WTN. Earned my Novice at the Dayton Hamvention that year; later operated as N8GZI and NS8V, before becoming K8SG in 1996. During my Amateur Career I have been active in many aspects of the hobby, including President of the Grand Rapids Amateur Radio Association; owner of repeaters on 220, 6 and 2 meters; and headed the local VE program for six years. During these years I worked primarily CW on HF. I served as the Kent County Emergency Coordinator for ARES and RACES. Because of my experience in Amateur Radio I also served on the Kent County Local Emergency Planning Commission, and received an appointment from the Governor of Michigan to the State Emergency Response Commission responsible for hazardous materials planning. I was a qualified Class A hazardous materials responder, and Incident Commander accredited through the Michigan State Police. I spent my career in manufacturing and engineering management, but I pretty much dropped out of the hobby in 1999 when I retired from my real job. But, thankfully, through the unending efforts and encouragement of W8UTE (SK), got back into the hobby late in 2008. Thanks, Tom!
