Dr. Wesley A. Roads was born on March 12, 1918, in Akron, Ohio, to John W. and Pauline Roads. Wes was attending Ohio University at the outbreak of WWII, but withdrew to enlist at Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio, in the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He was credited for his radio skills, and rose through the officer ranks, serving in both the European and Pacific theaters during the war.
Wes then attended Michigan State University, receiving his B.A. degree in 1947, and his medical degree from Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland in 1951. His internship was at Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland, Ore., and he had a pediatric residency at the University of Rochester, completed in 1954.
Wes returned to active military service in 1954 and served as chief of the pediatric department at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base until 1958. He was chief of the medical services branch at the base until July 1959, when he resigned from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of lieutenant colonel, to accept a position at the Freeport Clinic in Freeport, Illinois.
Wes was certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1957 and a year later was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. His hobby was amateur radio, and he maintained his license wherever his career took him. His wife was a native of Rochester, N.Y. The couple had five children as of 1959.
Wes passed away on July 21, 1969, in Wood County, Ohio.
