Richard J. Cox, age 79 of Salem died Sunday evening in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers.

Born and raised in Ipswich, the son of the late John E. and Mary E. (Perry) Cox, he was graduated from Ipswich High School in the Class of 1947. Mr. Cox then became employed by Cushman.s Bakery, until serving in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953.

Upon his discharge he returned to Cushman.s Bakery until its closing in 1969. He then was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Works, Peabody Garage until 1981, later at Salem Hospital for 10 years and retired from Peabody Essex Museum after eight years of employment in 2005.

He was a life member of both the American Legion William Connery Post 6 in Lynn and the National Rifle Association.

Predeceased by a brother, John E. Cox III, he is survived by his extended family Susan Wong of Londonderry, NH, her two children and four grandchildren Alyssa and her husband Robert Nerden and Olivia Emelian and four grandchildren Shawn Jr., Tyler, Eric and Emma well as Salem Police Department Animal Control Officer Donald Famico and his wife Joanne and their children Alison, Jay and Heather of Salem.

A gathering of relatives and friends will be held on Wednesday evening from 3 to 7 P.M. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St., Salem. Interment services will on Thursday at 2:00 P.M. in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem, please meet at the Appleton St. and Orne St gate at 1:45 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr, Peabody, MA 01960.
