BANGOR - Lewis James Nutter, 85, beloveed husband of Grace (Torrey) Nutter, died unexpectedly April 23, 2004, at a Brewer healthcare center.

He was born Sept 27, 1918, in Sedgwick, the son of Fred and Hannah (Carter) Nutter.

He was employed with H.P. Hood for many years and later for 24 years with Chevron Oil of Hampden prior to retirement.

Lewis was an active member of Glad Tidings Church, where he sang, played the saxophone and guitar in the orchestra. He was faithful to his family and loved serving and teaching others in Sunday school, nursing homes and jail ministry.

Lewis was predeceased by a son, Richard Nutter; two grandsons, Christopher Michael Nutter, and Daniel Nutter; and two brothers, Paul and Franklin Nutter.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Grace are two children, Christine Speed and her husband, Vaughn, of Corinth; Marvin Nutter and his wife, Carolyn, of Hampden; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Nutter of Florida; 12 grandchildren, Marilyn Curtis, Linda Luellen, Betty Speed, Connie Alvarado, Sally Speed, Michael Nutter, Cindi Valley, Michelle Young, Johnathan Nutter, Scott Nutter, Steven Nutter, Sandra Rowan; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Miriam Black, Emma Gray; one brother, Weymouth Nutter; many nieces and nephews.

Lewis will be missed by many loved ones and friends.

Friends may call 6-8 pm Monday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St, Bangor.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm Tuesday at Glad Tidings Church, Broadway, Bangor.
Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Glenburn.
