Claude E. Tavernier, Jr., 65, of Denver, Iowa, formerly of Albany, Oregon, died at his home Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from complications of Agent Orange.
He was born October 23, 1947 in Trona, CA, son of Claude and Helen Hilliard Tavernier. He married Barbara Richards on January 13, 1968 in China Lake, CA.
Claude graduated from Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, Calif. in 1965. He then joined the Marine Corps serving in Viet Nam and retired after 20 years. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1994.
He was an amateur radio operator for over 30 years (KA6PBU) involved in emergency service. He served as Lodge Secretary and Life member of Masonic St. Johns Lodge #17. He was also a life member of the DAV and the NRA.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Joyce (Scott) Cornell, Woodgate, NY; grandson, Wyatt Cornell; 2 sisters, Yvonne Fisher, Ridgecrest, Calif. and Debra Neves, Myrtle Pt., Oregon; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Sue (Jerry) Guenther, Denver, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, a niece and a great-nephew. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice, 207 20th St. NW, Waverly, IA 50677. Arrangements are by Locke Funeral Home.
