Clyde Schaffnit, KB8HV SK --- 4 January 1919 to 5 December 2007 ---

SCHAFFNIT, Clyde R. Age 88, died on December 5th at Greene Memorial Hospital in Xenia, Ohio. Clyde was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1919. He was a radio enthusiast from an early age, building his first crystal radio set as a boy. In his adulthood he earned the amateur radio license and became WA8DEV and later upgraded to KB8HV.

Clyde's patriotism and his interest in aircraft led him to join the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as an engineer at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where he later worked as a civilian engineer. He retired after thirty-three years.

In 1943 he married Janet Lindstrom of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Her intelligence and good looks had won his heart when they were students together at Iowa State University. About 1950 they moved to Sugarcreek Township, to the house they designed and built themselves.

They became active community members. Clyde belonged to the Lions Club and served as a township board member. He enjoyed music and athletics. He played softball as a younger man and competed in tournament table tennis from a young age until last year. Clyde was an active and enthusiastic member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Xenia for fifty-seven years. He served as a church elder, sang in the choir, and helped frequently as an electronic consultant and technician.

His wife Janet, 4 children, 6 grrandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews will miss him.

Clyde was a kind and loving man with an abundant sense of humor. He lived his long life as a faithful servant of God, always seeing the best in others and lending a helping hand. His body was donated to Wright State University Medical School.

A memorial service was held on January 4th 2008 which would have been his 89th birthday at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 990 Old Springfield Pike, Xenia, Ohio,.

Clyde was co-founder of the Bellbrook Amateur Radio Club and a very active member over the past 30-some years. He was a member of DARA (Dayton Amateur Radio Ass.), QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Ass.), MVUS (Midwest VHF/UHF Society) and AMSAT (Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation).
