PORTSMOUTH - James William Kyle, age 92, died in the company of his family during the early morning of Friday, May 25, 2018. Jim was born on January 15, 1926 to James C. Kyle and Margareta McCune Kyle in Springfield, Ohio. He attended the University of Colorado, where he joined the NROTC program in 1944. Later he graduated from MIT in 1947 with a BS in Electrical Engineering, focusing on Naval Electronics. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Technical Officer and Ship Superintendent during the Korean War, being released from active duty in 1952. In 1960, he graduated from Northeastern University night school with a MS in Electrical Engineering. Jim joined Raytheon Corporation's submarine sonar group, and later served as Manager of the Submarine Sonar Division of the Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London, until his retirement. Jim had a passion for electronics. He was an avid radio amateur starting in 6th grade, obtaining his first amateur license in 1940. In 1985, he was relicensed as Amateur Extra Class, and was a longstanding member of the Newport County Ham Radio Club. For several years he volunteered in the Middletown High School in developing a new electronics curriculum and co-teaching the course. Jim also loved vegetable gardening and sailing with his family. He was a longtime member of Ida Lewis Yacht Club, and the Newport Yacht Club. Jim loved his family, community and friends. He was very active at Child & Family Services in Newport RI for many years and championed their work. Many will remember him for his deeply religious convictions, and for his leadership as a member and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Newport, and the Waterford Presbyterian Church of Waterford, Connecticut. Jim lived the last 7 years at Atria Aquidneck Place in Portsmouth RI, in order to remain near his friends and Church community after his loving wife, Ethel McCauley Kyle, predeceased him in 2010. He leaves a daughter, Elizabeth Ellen Kyle of Ithaca NY, and three sons: James Herbert Kyle of Keene, NH, Gordon Lewis Kyle of Norwich, CT, and Dr. David McCauley Kyle of Danville, Vt. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Memorial Service and Reception will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 4 Everett Street, Newport, RI 02840. Memorial gifts may be sent to the "Organ Fund" at the church which is dedicated to the repair and maintenance of the church organ. He sang in the church choir for many years.
