David James Mock, age 84, passed away suddenly on May 22, 2018, in Salem. Dave was born to Lorena (Breckheimer) Mock in Salem, just weeks after his father, Merle, died in an auto accident. Dave grew up in the Mt. Angel and NE Salem areas. He attended Sacred Heart High School, where he was a talented basketball player. He graduated from high school in 1952.
Dave enlisted in the US Navy during the Korean War. After four years, he transitioned to reserve status and became an Oregon State Trooper until he rejoined the Navy in 1960. He married Patricia Cleary in 1960, and they were married for 55 years until her death in 2015.
During his Naval service, Dave was sent as a submariner to the East and West Coasts, the Mediterranean, Japan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Australia, and the Vietnam War zone. He was a Cheif Torpedoman for most of his Naval career, and he retired in 1976. After resettling in Salem, Dave worked for the US Postal Service as a mail handler and a technician until his retirement.
Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid ham radio operator and made many friends through his radio connections. He belonged to ham radio clubs in Oregon, Washington, and Arizona over the years, and he maintained an impressive log of all the stations he communicated with around the world. He also belonged to the Salem Elks and the Eagles.
Dave is survived by Lorene (Mike) Vollmar of Salem, Linda (Larry) Miller of Bakersfield, CA, Lawrence (Jennifer) Mock of Anchorage, AK, Lisa (Ray) Flaiz of O'Fallon, IL, Lois Debrobander of St. Louis, MO and Daniel (Angelina) Mock of Lincoln City; 11 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his wife, his mother, his father, his step-father Jerome Rosche', and his brother Donald.
Services will be held for Dave on Saturday, June 2, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9168 Silver Falls Hwy in Shaw. The rosary will begin at 10:30 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am. A reception at the Church Hall will follow. Interment with military honors will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
