William (Bill) Howland Hussey, 96, peacefully passed away after a brief illness Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Givens Highland Farms.
A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Dr. George Benjamin Hussey and Jenness Buckner Hussey. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, son David, brother John, and sisters Sarah and Mary Margaret.
He is survived by his son Bill, Jr., daughter-in-law Susan, and grandchildren Maya, Sasha, and Ben.
Bill was a veteran of WWII, a graduate of Duke University, and worked many different jobs, including operating the Pack Square Cigar Store in the 1980's.
He was an avid reader, gifted artist, and enjoyed playing piano, violin, brass instruments, and the accordion. Bill sang in the choir at Asbury Memorial Methodist Church and Central United Methodist Church.
In retirement, he enjoyed volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, on mission trips, and at the VA hospital where he logged in over 7,000 hours until the age of 94.
The family deeply appreciates Bill.s medical team at St. Joseph.s Hospital and our support team from CarePartners Hospice for their outstanding care the last 2 weeks of his life, and the residents and dedicated staff at Givens Highland Farms, who became Bill.s warm and caring extended family the past 2 years.
