Chapter 16

Most people call me "Tomy", some "Tom", either one is fine. I started in Amateur radio in May 1963. I visited my Elmer's station a few times. I had observed hams at my high school talking to other hams on a Heathkit DX-100 radio in electricity class. So I decided to take the Novice test at my Elmers house, and in May 63 I received my first license WN9HYM.
I had a ball talking with stations on cw all over the world on my homemade 40 meter dipole, Knight T-60 Transmitter and Knight R-100A Receiver. About 4 months later I went downtown Chicago and took the code and written test for the General and passed, and became WA9HYM. Those FCC guys were a little scary.
Moved to Arizona in 1974 and became WA7ZXU. I took a little time out in the 70's to help raise five kids, and then about 1980 became active again. In 1987 I took the Advanced test and became KF7GC, and in 1991 I took the Extra test and kept the same call.
