Robert E. Lane, 93, passed away Sunday (July 24, 2016) following a brief illness with cancer. Robert was born January 18, 1923 in Scott County, VA to the late William Trig Lane and Hettie Davidson Lane.
Bob (Jack) graduated from Hilton High School, VA and served during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corp. as a radio operator on a C-47 cargo plane. Bob flew missions as a crew member in dropping troops behind enemy lines. Following his service, he was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company in the Research and Chemical Engineering Division until his retirement.
Bob was an active member of The American Radio Relay League and the Tennessee Emergency Communications Net (Kl4V). Bob enjoyed teaching as well as encouraging others in the skills of code operation and Ham Radio technology.
Bob had interests in musical instruments, photography, graphic art sketches, and drawings. It was a joy for Bob to design personalized greeting cards, especially his beautiful and inspiring Christmas cards.
Bob was an active member of Bridwell Heights Presbyterian Church. Bob served as a Ruling Elder for 58 years. In addition to his parents,
Bob was preceded in death by his brother, Rev. William Lane; sisters, June Lane Rose and Nancy Lane Blalock. Bob is survived by the love of his life, Lena Seaver Lane of 64 years; sister, Ruby Lane Johnson & husband Lionel of Hiltons, VA; brother, Harvey Lane & wife Vickie of Knoxville, TN; brother in law, Eugene Blalock of Hiltons, VA; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The family will receive friends on Wednesday (July 27, 2016) from 5 to 7 p.m. at East Lawn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will immediately follow at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Hines and Rev. Larry Ball officiating. Committal services will be held Thursday morning (July 28, 2016) at 10:00 am in the Christus Garden at East Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Bridwell Heights Presbyterian Church (108 Bridwell Heights Rd. Kingsport, TN 37664). The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rev. Larry Ball and Mr. Lane's Church family for their many years of devoted love and friendship; also to the many godly volunteers whom gave their time and compassion.
