Anchorage Daily News March 18, 1998 John Brooklyn Griffin Jr., 72, died of cancer March 15, 1998, at the Mary Conrad Center. A funeral with a visitation was at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown, with Chaplain Don McCullough officiating. Burial with full military honors was in the Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mr. Griffin was born Feb. 7, 1926, in Sacramento, Calif., to John and Grace Stephens Griffin. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and came to Alaska in August 1947. He was a communications management specialist. Mr. Griffin's years in Alaska were spent in Anchorage, Big Mountain, Middleton Island, Ketchikan and Cape Romanzof. He had worked at Elmendorf Air Force Base, RCA/White Alice and Wolfe's Department Store and for the Bureau of Land Management, retiring in 1987. Mr. Griffin enjoyed camping and was Campground Host at Fort Flagler, Wash. He was a ham radio operator, KL7AMH ''Alaska's Mighty Huskies,'' and enjoyed fishing, birdwatching and gardening. He ran for the Alaska House in 1996 as an independent candidate. He was a charter boat captain and computer and Internet enthusiast. Mr. Griffin's family wrote: ''Dad's love of life and adventure brought him to Alaska and led him to his many friends and experiences in his life here. His interest in the welfare of his friends helped many through trying times. He was a wonderful mentor in many areas including boating, telecommunications, ham radio and computers. He was known for his 'world-renowned' smoked salmon.'' Mr. Griffin was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Jon Griffin. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy John and Bonny Griffin of Everett, Wash.; his son-in-law, Thomas Brownell of Anchorage; brothers, Frank of Soldotna, Ken of Fresno, Calif., Melvin of Sacramento and Norman of Spokane, Wash.; sister, Lorna Corry of Anacortes, Wash.; and grandchildren, Taylor and Jessica Griffin of Everett, and Jori Brownell and Jarod Griffin-Brownell of Anchorage. Arrangements are by Evergreen Memorial Chapel. |
