Chapter 1

13 May 2015

W8OVH went live on HF on 6 May 2015 at around 1800 EDT. Since then we have been working the bugs out but for the most part but have made many contacts on CW amd SSB. Soon we will be QRU/V on at least a couple of data modes and rtty. We have the interface up and running. We are having a lot of fun with it. Our new Technician Class operators will soon be upgrading to General we hope.

Thats all for now and I look forward to our next qso. 73.

Today our club callsign at Ohio Veterans Home Sandusky became W8OVH. KE8APJ was canceled and the first choice of our vanity call sign request was granted by FCC.

We now have a club callsign! It is KE8APJ - Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky - and it was issued on 18 March 2015. As trustee, I went ahead and immediately applied for a vanity callsign and hopefully one of our choices will be greenlighted by the FCC.

We now have a total of 6 licensed hams in the club including 3 brand new Technician Class license holders, 2 Generals and 1 Extra. Congratulations to the new Techs! OVH has authorized our use of an old conference room that will be our shack. It is currently being remodeled so we have not moved in yet. It is on the third floor in a central location.

At present we do not have any hf antennas up but very soon we hope to have a 134 foot Windom up at least 35 feet.

We do have a good start as far as equipment goes including a Yaesu FT-450D and a Heathkit HW-8 qrp rig for HF and an Icom 2100H 2 meter rig. A lot of our equipment was donated from area hams, including the Icom-2100H and HW-8. We also need to put up a more permanent 2 Meter antenna outside and an old 2m Ringo has been donated to us for that purpose.

Thats all for now and I look forward to our next qso. 73 for now.

Name here is Dan and the qth is Sandusky, Ohio. Here getting active again after a long dry spell as my interests strayed for 10-12 years or so. Thankfully, I always renewed my ticket on time and have been licensed since the early 70s. I passed my Extra in Feb 1985 in front of an FCC examiner as well as the required 20 wpm cw test. My callsign before that was KA8GPB with a general class ticket.

My first callsign was novice call WN8IWQ issued in '70 or '71. That license had a 2-year non-renewable term limit. It expired for a couple of years and then I passed my general and got KA8GPB around 1976 while on active duty in the US Navy.

My primary interests lie in CW but I am in the process of getting active in the digital modes as well. As an avid open source advocate, my operating system of choice is Gentoo Linux but I also admire pclinuxos because it always just works.

I am a resident at the Ohio Veterans Home and a few of us are in the process of getting recognized as an official club and activity here and hopefully we will have a workable hamshack very soon. Perhaps we will be able to get a Club callsign.

I look forward to our next qso. 73 for now..
