Hanover - Moody Chalmers (Bud) Thompson Jr., 98, passed away in peace March 8th, 2022, at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Sprenkle Drive in York. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Grace Virginia (Reagan) in 2015. Born March 19, 1923, in Punxsutawney Pennsylvania, he earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Cornell University in 1944, and Ph.D. in physics from Catholic University in 1952. He worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder CO until he retired. His research was in atomic physics, ultrasonics, and electromagnetic wave propagation. Dr. Thompson published more than sixty scientific papers and held 11 U.S. patents. He received the Commerce Department Silver Medal for his work relating to missile tracking and guidance systems. From 1962 until his retirement Dr. Thompson was the U.S. member on the NATO Advisory Panel on Radiometeorology. Bud was active in HAM radio (N0AA) from the age of 10 and worked for years with the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) to find help for those in need during natural disasters. After retirement, he became an EMT and worked for the volunteer fire department in Cripple Creek, CO. He is survived by his children Michael Thompson (Kathleen) of Hagerstown MD, Dennis Thompson, and Gerald Thompson both of Thornton CO, Patricia Collamer (Dean) of Hanover, PA and Margaret Thompson of Cotopaxi, CO; five grandchildren; and 6 beautiful great-granddaughters. He was a model of boundless curiosity and persistence. His family will celebrate his amazing life in a private ceremony. |
