Pete J. Chantiles, 80, of York, died at 10:44 a.m. Sunday at his home, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Delores (Clements) Chantiles. The couple observed their 56th wedding anniversary May 4.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist, 140 N. Beaver St., York. Burial will be in the church memorial garden. Rites by York City Police Honor Guard will be given at the memorial service and at the graveside service. Visitation will follow the memorial service Sept. 7 at the church's parish hall. Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St., York, is in charge of arrangements. His rector, the Rev. David W. Lovelace, and the Rev. Gretchen Rehberg, assistant to the rector, will officiate.
Mr. Chantiles was born Aug. 11, 1922, in York. He was the son of the late James Nicholas and Louloudia (Stavropoulos) Chantiles.
He worked for York City Police Department from 1948 until 1973; later, he was elected constable of York; and was a certified private detective, an enforcement officer for the Domestic Relations Office and a tipstaff for Judge Buckingham and Judge Miller. He also retired from the York County Sheriff's Office and had operated a notary public service for tag and title registrations and transfers. He was a US Army Air Force veteran of WWII; a life member of Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist and a former member of the church's associate vestry; a 1941 graduate of William Penn Senior High School; attended Fullerton Junior College; a former member of AHEPA and past president of the organization's local chapter; a 50-year member of Sinclair Lodge 154 Free and Accepted Masons in West Columbia, SC; a 32nd-degree Mason; a member of Harrisburg Consistory; a life member of Zembo Temple and York Forest 30 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; a member of York County Shrine Club; a former member of York Rite Chapter 304 and Commandery; a life member of Vigilant Fire Company; a member of York County Firemen's Relief Association, York County Amateur Radio Club and Keystone Amateur Radio Club; an honorary member of the York County Constables Association; a member of local, state and national Fraternal Order of Police; a licensed auctioneer; and a member of state and national auctioneers' associations.
Mr. Chantiles also is survived by two daughters, Diane Lynn Chantiles-Brant of Wrightsville and Georgia Chantiles-Ruby of Towson, Md.; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Sophia Reiber and Bessie Yoder, both of Dover, and Victoria Overmiller of York. Mr. Chantiles was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Ann Chantiles-Shermeyer, in 2001.
