John L. Harbin departed on Flight 2013 from McGhee Tyson bound for Heaven on Nov. 24, 2013. He was 90 years old. John lived in East Tennessee for his entire life, only leaving the area during World War II when he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Alaska. John met and married the love of his life, Nita, while stationed in Astoria, Ore. They returned to the Maryville area, where they had five children and made a life surrounded by family and friends. John was an active member at Everett Hills Baptist Church and then joined Madison Avenue Baptist Church. He was a Mason, taught swimming lessons for the American Red Cross, was active with the "HAM Radio" club, enjoyed camping and all his children's school activities through the years. He was an air traffic controller for the FAA stationed at McGhee Tyson for most of his 38 years before retirement. He loved his home and enjoyed working in his yard and flowers. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nita Olney Harbin; second wife, Margie Spangler Harbin; son, Jerry L. Harbin; and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Harbin.He is survived by his four children and their spouses, Jan and Gary Schachterle, Francie and Robert Castleberry, Jamie and Donna Harbin, Kevin and Debbie Harbin; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.Special thanks to Dr. Souther, Dr. Shafi and Hospice.
