First Call: WB5JBL in 1973
Frank McCollom born March 5, 1921 in Healdton, Oklahoma, to Vance McCollom and Bertha Dewart McCollom died June 17, 2008.
He graduated from Britton High School in the class of 1939. During this time, Frank joined Britton Methodist Church. At Britton High he played football and was on the wrestling team.
Frank met the love of his life and his best friend, Alice Hutchinson in high school and married her in 1941. Soon after they married, World War II began and Frank enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp - he wanted to become a pilot. He received his wings as a fighter pilot and soon was made an instructor. Frank was a Certified Instrument Instructor. He loved flying, it was his greatest joy, but when he was no longer flying, he took up Ham Radio.
His call sign was 'N5FM' and he was known throughout Oklahoma and Arkansas. Frank donated over twenty years of service to the Salvation Army and set up their emergency communication disaster preparedness program. Frank's years of experience led the authorities to call him back into service during the aftermath of the 1995 bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Many of the stories Frank would share came from his experiences shared with 'Ham' friends all over the country.
Frank was a man of many talents. At one time, he decided to build a home on property owned by his wife's family since The Run in 89. He built their home from the ground up, designing it, laying the foundation, including building his own cement mixer.
Frank was also a super salesman and sold many products during his life time. The last 35 years he worked for Perfection Equipment Company. He was an outside truck equipment salesman for them.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by two daughters, a son-in-law, a grandson and two great grand daughters.
