Maloney, 73, were held Tuesday, March 5, at the Chapel of Chimes with burial in Fort Benton cemetery.The son of Mike Maloney, a former city marshall and jailer, and Eva Strickland Maloney, he was known as "Sonny" in his childhood. He graduated from the Montana State School for the Deaf and Blind, 1940, and was honored as "Outstanding Alumnus" during the 1993 centennial.Immediately after high school he owned and operated a Fort Benton cigar and confectionery store. Then he ran newspaper sales for one-third of downtown Great Falls.Maloney graduated Magna cum Laude from the College of Great Falls, 1956. He was the first blind person certified to teach primary and secondary school in Montana. He taught grades 5 - 12 in Landusky, Winnett, and Inverness and Montana Correspondence School. He earned a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology, Minnesota, in 1967. He worked in his field in Minnesota and Pennsylvania before serving on the Penn State University faculty, Altoona campus. He also taught at Community College, Ponape in the Trust Territory of Micronesia.He married Kay LaBarron in 1956 in Great Falls. Maloney studies and joined the Baha'i Faith in 1969.A 50-year member of the Montana Association for the Blind, he held offices locally and statewide. He was also an amateur radio operator from 1950 until his death. Maloney served with suicide and crisis lines in Montana and Pennsylvania.Survivors include his wife at home and two sons, Patrick, a Navy Chief Petty Officer in San Diego, Calif., and Colin, a cryogenics technician, Bremerton, Wash.; and six grandchildren. |
