North Bend, OR

QCWA # 38868
First Call: KA6LHQ issued in 1980       Other Call(s): N6KBG W6ULF N6CTT

I am a 3rd generation Ham Radio Operator, My Grandfather got his first call in the late 1930's (W6RWE). He was an avid operator until WW2 started and the government showed up one day and took all of his equipment to use in the war. After the war he started the first Motorola franchise West of the Mississippi in 1947 called Comserco in Riverside, California. He installed the first two way communications to every City and County municipality in Southern California. He also set up the first Vhf Repeater Towers on a number of sites around Southern California. The original Repeater was built on Box Spring Mountain in the early 1950's and is still operational today.

My grandfather sold his business to his best friend and partner to retire. It has been 75 years since Comserco started and it is still the original Motorola franchise on the West Coast at its original startup location.

My father was WU6I, he wasn't as much into the Radio world as his father, but he was still active in his local Club (The Citrus-Belt Amateur Radio Club - W6JBT). He was a Volunteer Examiner for many years until his passing in 2020.

As for me, my first Call sign was KA6LHQ in 1980. When I finally decided to upgrade my license, I went to the FCC office in Long Beach, CA to find out that I was testing on the very "Last" day the FCC was doing testing. I passed the 13 WPM code test with ease for my General. I was granted my new licence a few weeks later with a new call sign of N6KBG. I held that call sign for some time until one day I decided to request a new vanity call of W6ULF. It's a long story about why I did it, but I had that call for a while. I joined the U.S. Navy. I went to school to become a Cryptologic Technician in Pensacola Florida. My job was as a Signal's Analyst. I was assigned to the Naval Communications Station, San Diego (NPL). Naval Radio Receiving Facility in Imperial Beach, CA (NOMAD/ASCOT Division).

I stayed in the Navy for 10 years until I was able to get a position with a Fire Department.

A few years later, I was able to volunteer on the U.S.S. Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum as a Special Events Radio Operator in San Diego, CA. During that time I decided to change my Call to N6CTT until I moved to Oregon 10 years later and changed my 6 land status for a 7.

So now being N7CTT, I'm retired and having the time of my life living on the beautiful Oregon Coast. It's like living in the mountains, but at the beach!

I live in a pretty rural area but we currently have 570 hams in our County. Which is a lot, considering the population density of major cities to the North and South of us.

I belong to the local Coos County Radio Club, Southwest Oregon Repeater Association, Mercury Amateur Radio Association, Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association, A.R.R.L., American Legion Amateur Radio Club and now QCWA.

I really like participating with local and Field Day events. I especially like participating with the Boy Scouts JOTA (Jamboree on the Air). I am a Council Commissioner with the Oregon Trail Council and have been involved with Scouting since 1967. I earned my Eagle Scout award in 1976.

I operate a Digipeater for the Marine Traffic AIS program. My Station number is 6313.

The automatic identification system (AIS) is an automatic tracking system that uses transceivers on ships and is used by vessel traffic services (VTS). When satellites are used to detect AIS signatures, the term Satellite-AIS (S-AIS) is used. AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport
