Dr. Richard T. Wood, 80, of Terre Haute, passed away January 30, 2021 in his residence surrounded by his family and friends.
Richard was born February 20, 1940 in Danville, PA, to William David Wood and Elizabeth Thomas Wood. He grew up in Shamokin, PA, and graduated from Shamokin High School in 1957, choosing to attend Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science for undergraduate work, where he graduated with a bachelor of science in bacteriology in 1961. He then attended Penn State University and graduated with both a master's and doctorate in microbiology.
Over the next 34 years, Richard pursued a career in microbiology with Pfizer Inc., retiring as Director of Microbiological Quality Assurance. He invested a large amount of time teaching and speaking with the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) where he received the honorable James. P. Agalloco Award for excellence in teaching.
Richard was very involved at Terre Haute First Baptist Church where he was a Bible teacher and a Deacon. Richard was also active as ham radio operator for over sixty years and a member of the Terre Haute Amateur Radio Club. He was a longtime president of Terre Haute North Little League and enjoyed restoring his red 1970 Ford Mustang. He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Martin Wood, whom he married on August 26, 1961.
He is survived by daughters, Jacqueline Wood (Glenn Simmons) of Houston, TX, and Alison Jones (Tom Greiner) of Terre Haute. He is survived by two sons, David Wood (Andrea) of Shelby Township, MI, and Matthew Wood (Stefanie) of Carmel, IN. He is survived by one sister, Constance Troutman of Lewisburg, PA; and a sister-in-law, Jayne Martin of Bellefonte, PA. He is survived by grandchildren, Conner Lubbehusen, Haley Simmons, Addison Jones, Chandler Simmons, Audrey Wood, Reagan Wood, Kingston Wood and Delaney Wood; as well and several nieces and nephews. Services are Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Terre Haute First Baptist Church, 4701 Poplar Street, Terre Haute, IN 47803. Rev. John Campbell will be officiating; burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Terre Haute First Baptist Church Building Fund or the Terre Haute Humane Society. Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute, IN 47804 was entrusted with arrangements.
