Gari was licensed as a novice in May of 1958 and earned his General Class license, K9PBV, in September of that year. Sometime in the 80's he upgraded to Advanced Class and and in 1986 passed the Amateur Extra class exams. He then became NG9V.

He has always been very active in the ham community achieving 75 meter WAS, working over 1500 counties, 300 countries for DXCC Phone, 312 countries for DXCC Mixed and WAC. NG9V served as the VE Chairman fro 1985 through 1991. He is currently a WAS checker. In 1986 and 1989 he was named FLARC's Ham of the Year.

Gari has long time memberships with FLARC, serving as president for two terms in 1996 and 1997, MDXC, serving as president in 2004 and 2005, CWRA, serving on the BOD for 25 years and writing their newsletter for several years, ARRL life member and QCWA life member.

The Air Force was his first calling and taught him about electronics. He was involved in building WFMK in Mount Horeb, worked for Evans Industrial Communications and then Wisconsin Bell. His time with the Air Force allowed him to operate HZ1AB.

NG9V is centered around a FT1000-MP and a Centurion amplifier. Drake MS-2000 and Dentron tuners flatten out any SWR mismatches at the transmitter. The station is equipped with a couple computers for packet and logging and various UHF and VHF transceivers.

Gari also provides the NG9V UHF repeater, which was primarily intended for MDXC use.

A Rohn HBDX-48 supports a HyGain TH5 and an Alpha Delta 160/80/40 sloper for HF and two UHF/VHF antennas for the repeater, packet and local communications. A GAP vertical can be seen behind for additional coverage on the HF bands.
