HANN, John - Passed away in his wife's arms on February 28th, 2015. He is survived by his wife Noreen (Irwin), daughter-in-law Marlene Hann, granddaughters Lindsay and Kelsey, great-grandson Harrison and sister Violet. John is predeceased by parents William and Dinah, son Dana, sister Helen and brother Clyde. John was born in Lamaline, Newfoundland in 1923. At the age of 17, he went to work for the Post & Telegraph offices to learn Morse Code. As a telegraph operator in Gander, he worked with the Ferry Command handling Trans-Atlantic communications. John came to Toronto to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway and eventually for Canadian National Rail until his retirement in 1988. In his retirement, John met Noreen through his time at the Hammond Museum of Radio and he has spent his remaining years happily enjoying nature, Morse Code Club, walks, the cottage at Lake Huron, reading and everything else with his wife Noreen. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 56 Duke St. W., Kitchener on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Hospice Wellington. Born Newfoundland 1923, worked for Nfld. Dept Posts & Telegraphs after leaving school in 1941, using American Morse. Joned Ferry Command 1946 at GANDER Airport, later handling trans-Atlantic commercial airline flights with all-morse communication for total of 11 years. Remaining years until retirement with both Canada's national railroads; still enjoy using both codes. 73 |
