OBITUARY OF WILLIAM ALAN HILES
November 19, 1925 - London, Ontario
February 14, 2019 - Calgary, Alberta
Alan Hiles of Calgary passed away on Feb 14, 2019 at the age of 93. In his last days, he was surrounded by family and under the loving care of the exemplary staff of the Wentworth retirement home.
He was born on Nov 19, 1925 to Leroy and Vera Hiles in London, Ontario. He attended the University of Western Ontario, graduating with an honours degree in Geology in 1949. Immediately after graduation, Alan headed west to Alberta with his new bride Irene. There he began a long career in the oil and gas industry, and in 1973 returned to Ontario as Director of the Energy Supply Branch for the NEB in Ottawa. He retired in 1988 and soon moved back to Calgary to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his three children Catherine (Bob) Steele Douglas and Robert (Carolyn); six grandchildren Shannon (Brent) Collier, Charlotte, Zachary, Lara, Emily and Adam and two great grandchildren, (Olivia and Aveigne). He was predeceased by Irene, his wife of 65 years, and his grandson Alan.
For 40 years Al was a licensed ham radio operator and loved talking to fellow hams around the world under the handles VE6ADL and VE3EEC. He was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed traveling; most memorable were the family car trips every summer. Al played trumpet and piano, and with a great voice would love to sing along to his favourite tunes, especially Big Band and Scottish music.
Our dad was a gentle, generous person well loved by all. He has gone to join his Valentine; may his soul rest in perfect peace.
