First Call: G3CHT in 1948
HOPKINS, George Wilfred (Hugh) February 27, 1920 . August 6, 2017 With great sadness, Hugh's family announces his passing at home in The Dunfield Retirement Residence. Hugh was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Audrey (Stanyon), his sister Doris Ranson (Harry) and his brother Tom (Jean). He leaves sons David (Lynn) and Donald (Barbara), grandsons Alan (Jennifer), Andrew (Anita) and Ian (Tamara Agar) and granddaughter Christine Watt O'Connell (Shawn). Hugh was very proud of his great-grandsons, Brendan, Elliott, William, Colton and Killian. Hugh served in the British Merchant Marine as a Radio Officer before and during the Second World War. He met Audrey in Toronto while awaiting the construction of a ship and they were married in 1943. After a few years of married life in Sunderland, England, they returned to Canada where Hugh worked in the wholesale fish business. He retained his interest in Morse code and for many years was a proud member of the Toronto Amateur Radio Club. He and Audrey loved spending time at their cottage overlooking Rice Lake until Audrey passed away in 2007. In 2010, Hugh chose The Dunfield as his new home. He plunged wholeheartedly into the Dunfield's community life and both staff and residents were beneficiaries of his wit, kindness and unique sense of fun. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Dunfield for making Hugh's time there such a joy and for their care during his last few months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prostate Cancer Canada, the Temmy Latner Palliative Care Centre at Mt. Sinai or to a charity of your choice. A private family service was held on August 12, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 26th at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery Visitation Centre, 375 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto, from 1:00 . 4:00 p.m., with remembrances of Hugh at 2:00 p.m.
