SMITH, John George March 30, 1929 - June 16, 2010 It is with great sadness that we announce that John George Smith passed away peacefully on June 16, 2010, at Rosedale Hospice. John was born in Calgary, Alberta, on March 30, 1929, to C.H. (Jack) and Stella Smith. John attended King George, Balmoral, and Crescent Heights schools.
He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Irene, of fifty-eight years; daughters: Debbie (Joe) Sullivan of Hazelton, BC and Diane (Gerry) Pelle of Mission, BC. John was proud of his five grandchildren, Tim (Noreen), Joey (Lisa), Elizabeth (Derek), Katie and Richard; two great-granddaughters, Fiona and Eavan; and two grandcats, Arthur and Jesse. John always expressed great memories of spending time with his extended family and friends, especially, Jack and Marie Barclay (deceased), Bert and Naida Schroeder and family; Julian Kucher and family; Joan Brown and family; Gail Costella and family; and Patti Barclay.
John was a loyal employee of Imperial Oil Limited for thirty-five years, retiring in 1982. John was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force Reserves 2403 Aircraft and Warning Squadron. He was a licensed Radio Amateur since 1953. His call sign was VE6AI. He also possessed a private pilot's license. John volunteered many hours for public service events, including the K100 relay run, the Banff-Calgary Relay, the MS Walk-a-Thon and Bike Tour, Foothills Academy Run-Walk-Roll and the Stampede Parade. He taught amateur radio courses for new recruits through the Calgary Amateur Radio Association, was a member of the Southern Alberta Radio Association and was a Cub Scout leader. John taught the first CNIB radio class for visually impaired amateurs in Edmonton and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 264. He was a generous contributor to a multitude of charities.
Despite having diminished vision because of macular degeneration, he maintained his skill as family photographer. John enjoyed being a grampa, hiking, reading, target shooting, flying, driving and beer. His favourite places in the world included visits to Hawaii with Irene and their friends, and hiking with his family and the Schroeders around Field, B.C.
