George Phelps died March 25, 2012 at age 88. He was the son of George E Phelps, Sr and Cora McIntyre. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Rita (Manion), children Juliana (Paul) Kierstein, Kevin (Allan Angerio), Mary (JC) Walford, Patrick (Kathy), Francis (Janeece), Timothy and Anthony, 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 4 sisters . Meridy Erlenborn, Marty (Pat) Lynch, Theresa Brown, Karen Beckett, 4 brothers . Albert .Monty., Frank, Ronald and Steven as well as many friends.
He was predeceased by his parents and three children . Daniel, Kathryn and Brian.
He was a jeweler for 72 years. He began work with his father in Grand Forks at age 15. When his father retired in the late 1950.s he continued to operate Phelps Jewelry until 1981 when he sold the business and came to Naples. He worked with Thalheimer.s Auction Gallery manufacturing jewelry. When the galley closed, he worked with his son Francis at Dakota Jewelry in Parkshore Plaza until retirement in 2009 at age 86. Over his working life he designed hundreds of original pieces that are owned by his family and many grateful customers.
He was a very generous man who was kind to everyone, clients, family and, strangers. He funded many charitable organizations. In his life he worked hard and played just as hard. He was an avid golfer, bowler and gardener and was an artist when doing carpentry work. He loved to tell you about his trees and plants and never got over Naples as Eden when you've come from the "artic". He had his short wave radio license until just before he died and spent years talking to people around the world. He loved to take the grandkids swimming at his pool or on walks around the neighborhood when they visited.
His funeral will be celebrated at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 5130 Rattlesnake Hammock, Naples, FL 34113 at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 28, 2012.
