The Reverend Gregory R. Hibbard of Sedalia, died Sep 23, 2002, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.
He was born Sep 19, 1934, in Aberdeen, SD, a son of Russell and Orpha Eidem Hibbard. On May 28, 1960, in Moline, IL, he was married to Vera Luton.
The Rev. Hibbard was baptized Oct 6, 1934, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. He lived in several states when he was young. He was confirmed at St Mark's Lutheran Church in Evansville, IN, in 1949. He was a 1952 graduate of South Pasadena-San Marino High School. He graduated from Pasadena City Junior College in 1954. He attended Bethany Lutheran College in Lindsborg, KS, in 1955, where he majored in sociology. During the summer of 1956, he began to work in a Lutheran mission congregation, which became Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mulvane, KS. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Bethany in 1957. He entered Augustana Lutheran Seminary in Chicago in 1958. He served seminary internships in Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin.
He was pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sedalia from 1969 to 1994. He retired from parish ministry on Aug 31, 1994, as pastor emeritus of Trinity Lutheran Church. He also served as pastor and in other capacities at churches in Kansas, Iowa and Missouri, including United Lutheran and St Paul's Lutheran, both in Cole Camp; Christ Lutheran in Sedalia; Our Savior Lutheran in Camdenton; St Andrew Lutheran in Columbia; and Kent Memorial Lutheran in Sunrise Beach.
He had been deputy director of the Sedalia/Pettis County Emergency Management Agency since 1999. He had served on the Lutheran Disaster Response Team in Missouri since 1982.
He was director of the food pantry and assistant director for financial assistance at the Open Door Service Center from 1996 to 1998. He was a security officer at the Missouri State Fair in 1995. He was an adjunct instructor of world religions at State Fair Community College from 1971 to 1995.
He was chairman of the statewide committee for the Missouri Festival of Sharing from 1995 to 1996. He became a member of the committee in 1990. He was a member of Sedalia-Pettis County Ministerial Alliance, chaplain of community law enforcement and of the Pettis County Volunteer Fire Department and chairman of the board of directors for Open Door Ministries in 2000. He was named vice-chairman of the board in 2002.
He was a member of the Sedalia Kiwanis Club, Pettis County Branch of the NAACP, Sedalia-Pettis County Amateur Radio Klub and of the local MS-150 Bike Ride Committee. He was named Outstanding Citizen by the Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce in 1983. He became a volunteer for the Pettis County Emergency Management Agency in 1972. He was named deputy director in 1999. He served on the board of directors, was board chairman and was chapter disaster chairman of the Pettis County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a past chairman of the Sedalia-Pettis County Interagency Group and vice president of the Amateur Radio Repeater Coordinating Council for Missouri. He trained in critical incident stress management in 1997 and became the coordinator of the Pettis County CISM team in 1998.
Also surviving are a son, Warren Hibbard of Bartlesville, OK; two daughters, Dena Hibbard of St Louis and Gail Greble of Independence; two sisters, Janet Hedlund and Joan Roberts, both of Salinas, CA; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Steven Hibbard.
Pallbearers were members of the Sedalia Police and Sedalia Fire Departments. Honorary pallbearers were Doris and Bob Hartley, Debbie Noland, John Willadsen, Nadine Fingland, Fred Overton, Jack Menges, Mary Fingland, Eric Hammersland, Valarie Swanson, Dr Phillip Hornbostel and Tim Mosier.
