Joseph A. Walters of Fort Collins passed away at Poudre Valley Hospital on September 7, 2011 at the age of 96. He had resided in the Fort Collins / Loveland area since 1981.
Joe was born on May 1, 1915 in Palermo, ND, son of Julius and Mary (Mitchell) Walters. He graduated from High School in Stanley, ND. On June 21, 1941 he married Elizabeth (Betty) Heppner in Sidney, MT. From 1946 until 1981, Joe was the Manager of McLean County Rural Electric Association in Garrison, ND, and was designated "Boss of the Year" in 1958.
Joe was very active in the Garrison community. He was President of the Toastmasters, served on various Boy Scout committees and for 26 years he was the secretary-treasurer of the Garrison Civic Club. He was also on the Communications Committee of the R.E.A. National Board.
Joe enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, square dancing and playing the organ. He was a ham radio operator, a computer aficionado, and loved a good card game. Along with Betty, he was a member of Peace With Christ Lutheran Church in Fort Collins. Joe was a man of few words but always had a joke to share at every gathering.
Joe is survived by Betty, his bride of 70 years, and sons Joseph G. (Sanae) Walters of Canyon Country, CA; Jeffery A. (Cindy) Walters of Fort Collins; 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alfred Walters.
The Walters family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the FC Good Samaritan for the wonderful care that he was given there.
Funeral services will be Friday, September 16, at 11 a.m., at Peace With Christ Lutheran Church with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions in memory of Joe may be made to Peace With Christ Lutheran Church, in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Rd., Fort Collins, CO 80526.
