Lloyd Wade Sherrill, 74, passed away at his home in Overland Park, Kansas, on November 25, 2014.
He was an Engineer at Black & Veatch in Kansas City, where he retired as a Project Manager in the Energy Engineering and Construction Division after 35 years of service. During his career with Black & Veatch, Mr. Sherrill was involved in the planning, engineering, procurement, and construction of electrical power generation projects having a total capacity of over 7,400 Megawatts at locations throughout the nation and the world. He was also involved in numerous upgrades and air quality emission control retrofits to existing power generating plants. In addition he was responsible for the planning, design, construction, and expansion of many new and existing electric power substations and transmission lines. His responsibilities ranged from Electrical Design Engineer, Resident Field Construction Engineer, Project Electrical Engineer, Section Head of the T&D Group, Project Engineering Manager, to Project Manager. He was a Registered Professional Engineer with licenses in the States of Arkansas, Kansas, Florida, Utah, Texas and New York.
He was a Life Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Power Engineering Society. He served as the Chairman of the Kansas City Section of the IEEE from 1979 - 1980. He was a graduate of Arkansas Polytechnic College at Russellville, AR, the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, AR, and the University of Missouri at Columbia, MO. He had also done postgraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Mr. Sherrill was a 1958 graduate of Waldron High School in Waldron, Arkansas. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran, entering service in 1964. He received a Commission as an Ensign upon graduation from the Navy's Officer Candidate School at Newport, RI, and served on the faculty at the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD as an Instructor of Electrical Engineering in the Science Department. He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, then to full Lieutenant before leaving active duty service in 1967. Mr. Sherrill joined the U. S. Naval Reserves following his active duty and remained a reservist until his honorable discharge in April of 1975.
Following his retirement from Black & Veatch, he worked as a part time Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Missouri . Kansas City. He was also a consultant to Black & Veatch on selected projects in the Energy Division. Mr. Sherrill was active in the Boy Scouts of America for several years while serving as an Assistant Scoutmaster at Troop 284 in Overland Park, KS. He was an Honorary Warrior of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say and a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.
He also enjoyed spending time in his hobby of Amateur Radio (Ham) where he was licensed as an Advanced Class Operator. His station was licensed by the FCC with the call sign of WØGXY.
Mr. Sherrill was a member and Deacon Emeritus at Leawood Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Property Committee.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm till 2:00 pm on Monday, December 1, 2014 at Leawood Baptist Church, 8200 State Line Road, Leawood, KS. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 pm in the same location.
Interment will be at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Overland Park, Kansas, following the service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bethel and Bessie (Garner) Sherrill of Waldron, AR. He leaves his hometown sweetheart, Ruth Ellen (Sparks), his wife of 52 years; plus two sons, Paul and wife Raniesa of Orrick, MO; Mark of Prairie Village, KS; and one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Gieseke and husband Mike, of Overland Park, KS; plus two granddaughters, Kasara Arnold and Mary Kincayde Sherrill; two grandsons, Nathaniel Gieseke and Keit Sherrill; three step-grandsons, Brandon Quick, Dustin Jenkins and Danny Jenkins; and three great grandchildren, Lyric and Kenden Arnold and Skylar Jenkins.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Leawood Baptist Church.
