John Robert Vick passed away peacefully on April 9, 2014 at his home in Longmont, CO. He would have been 96 today, April 13 th 2014.
John was born on his family farm April 13, 1918 in Rice Lake, WI to Peder and Claudina (Olson) Vick.
He joined the Wisconsin National Guard in 1938 and was activated into the regular army at the outbreak of WWII. During WWII John attended Officer Candidate School at Yale University where he met and married his wife Eleanor Nestor on May 9, 1944.
At the end of WWII he left the U.S. Army Air Corps but remained active in the Connecticut National Guard. John was once again activated to serve during the Korean War, then continued serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve until his retirement in 1969 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
John and Eleanor moved to Longmont in 1969 where he continued working for Bell Laboratories until retiring in 1975.
He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church of Longmont where he taught an adult Bible study class.
John enjoyed traveling extensively with Eleanor both within the U.S.A. and internationally.
John also volunteered his time both at Denver airport as a "DIA Ambassador" for ten years as well as transporting cancer patients to & from their medical appointments.
As a hobby John was an avid amateur radio operator ("Ham Radio") and was heavily involved in "M.A.R.S." (Military Affiliated Radio System) which relayed messages to & from soldiers and their families in the days before inexpensive international phone calls or the internet were available.
John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Orrin and Peter; and four sisters Esther, Dorothy, Johanna, and Olina. John is survived by his wife of 69 years Eleanor Vick; his children Betty (Ron) Foster, John (Regena) Vick, and Timothy (Marianne) Vick; eight grandchildren Jeremy, Jennifer, Lynsay, Julie, Kenneth, Jessica, Jonna, and Kerra; five great-grandchildren Graham, Hugh, Nolan, Preston, and Beck; his sister Anna Mae; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM Monday April 14, 2014 at First United Methodist Church of Longmont.
Memorial contributions can be made to First United Methodist Church in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
