Dr. William George Schrenk, 91, Manhattan, died Monday, March 11, 2002, at his residence at Collins Landing in the Meadowlark Hills Health Care Center.
He was born on July 13, 1910, in Hiawatha, the son of the Rev. George and Bertha (Steenbock) Schrenk.
A native of Hiawatha, he attended junior college in St. Joseph, Mo., and graduated from Western Union College in LeMars, Iowa, in 1932. He taught science and coached in Iowa high schools for six years.During the summers of those six years, he worked toward his MS degree at KSU, which he completed in 1936. After that, he and his family moved to Manhattan, where he pursued his PhD, which he completed in 1945. Dr. Schrenk joined the staff at KSU in 1938 as an instructor of Chemistry. In 1951, he was named full professor and continued to teach freshman chemistry to literally thousands of KSU students.In 1973, he was selected for one of the all-university awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Schrenk did research with his interests being in emission spectroscopoy, flame photometry, trace elements in agriculture and atomic absorption spectroscopy. He retired from the university in 1976. His professional memberships and honors were numerous, and included Sigma Xi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Phi Lambda Upsilon Honorary Chemical Society of which he was national president from 1963-1966, Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Kappa, Kansas Academy of Science and the American Chemical Society. In addition, he is the author of more than 60 research papers, bulletins and articles. Dr. Schrenk's civic memberships included the First United Methodist Church. He was also an amateur radio station operator and enjoyed trout fishing and photography.
On June 8, 1932, in Fullerton, Neb., he was united in marriage to Ellen Schrenk. She preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1996. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer, who died in infancy, and Matthew.
He is survived by two daughters, Sara K. Busse, Shickley, Neb., and Susan E. "Sue" Roepke and her husband Dick, Manhattan; one grandson, Vincent Busse, and his wife Marcia; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Melanie Busse; and three nephews and one niece.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Wills officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Friday until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Meadowlark Hills Foundation.
