Alvin W. "Al" Schwertfeger, 88, died Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at Diversicare of Hutchinson. He was born March 24, 1930, in Iuka, to August and Lydia (Klute) Schwertfeger.
Al graduated from Preston High School in 1948 and served from 1952 to 1954 in the United States Navy. He graduated from Central Technical Institute, Kansas City, Missouri, in 1957, and retired after 24 years of service to the Federal Aviation Administration as an electronic engineer. Al enjoyed playing golf and working with electronics, especially ham radio. He built his first ham radio at the age of 16! Al was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church for over 21 years.
On September 17, 1950, he married Donna Rolf in Natrona, Kansas.
Al is survived by: his wife of 68 years, Donna; son, Galen and wife Belinda; granddaughters, Arrianne Carder (Stoney), Alexandra Howard (Dr. Thomas); and great-grandchildren, Grant, Morgan, Paige, Grayson, Olivia, and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; five brothers; and great-grandson, Riley.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, November 19, 2018, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 East 12th, Hutchinson, with Pastors Quentin Nuttmann and Henry Blickhahn officiating. Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Preston, Kansas, with military honors conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elliott Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
