Robert Lane, 1922-2011
Robert W. Lane, 88, son of Francis and Dolly, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Boone Hospital Center. Bob will be cremated, and his ashes will rest at Arlington National Cemetery. There will be a private memorial at a later date.
Born in Mediapolia, Iowa, he joined the U.S. Navy just before Pearl Harbor. As a radioman on destroyer tenders, he was a part of several convoys going across the North Atlantic. During the war, he also saw service in Algiers and Naples, Italy. Ten years after the war, Bob rejoined the Navy. He retired in 1972 as a radioman chief, with ham radio being his lifelong interest.
He volunteered for 10 years at BHC. Staff there enjoyed Bob for his easy way of meeting people and for his generous sense of humor. In turn, he enjoyed them. Bob will be missed by all who knew him, especially by his niece, Kathryn, who also was in the U.S. Navy, and by dear friends Mary and Steve, Pris and Leroy.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters; and by his first wife of 49 years, Juanita. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; 11 nieces and nephews; his stepdaughter, Megan; stepson Eric; and the light of his life, Megan's daughter, Ana.
