Roy was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on January 31, 1920. Roy was the oldest of six children born to Leroy D. Smith Sr. and Eliza Teter Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Mae Williams Smith, brother Boyd Dee Smith who was killed in World War II and his sister Lavonne Rardin. Roy was married to Shirley Mae Williams Smith in 1941. Roy and Shirley had three children: Teddy Royleen, Timothy Daunt (twins) and Erin Scott Smith. Dad is survived by: sons, Timothy D. Smith (Brenda), E. Scott Smith (Karen) and daughter Teddy R. Mainord (Doug), all from Saint George, UT; his sisters Helen Watts, Corrales, NM; Eileen Braun, San Jose, CA; and Donna James, Blackfoot, Idaho; and his beloved cousin Lois Roxana Heermance, Bountiful, UT; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Roy was the youngest licensed Ham Radio operator in Utah at the age of 12 (W0QHO). Roy served in the Navy during World War II in North Africa as a Chief Warrant Officer. He was a graduate of Capt. Eddy's Radar School in Chicago, Ill. Dad was an expert in Radar and responsible for keeping the Navy's radio and radar systems running in the North African theater of operations. Dad worked for the Union Pacific as a radio engineer before starting and successfully operating Radiosmith, an appliance and furniture store, in Omaha, Nebraska over 25 years. Dad attended the Doscher Country School of Photography in South Woodstock, Vermont for several years; where he was an accomplished and awarded student. Roy also studied with professional photographers Galen Rowell, Dewitt Jones and George Lepp. Roy was a well known and renowned photographer in the Salt Lake City, Utah area.
A Funeral Service will be held on Wed., July 16th 2008 at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City, UT at 12 noon. A Viewing will be held one hour prior to the Services and from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2008.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah immediately following the service.
