LuVerne (Verne) Voss, 86 of Grand Island died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Grand Island Veterans Administration Medical Center with his family by his side.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Reverend Charles L. Torpey will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Voss was born February 4, 1926 at Ashland, NE the son of John and Agnes (Krahmer) Voss.
Survivors are his wife of 61 years, Mary; sons and daughter-in-law, Tom Voss of Grand Island and Tim and Lisa Voss of Lincoln; daughters and son-in-law, Jean Mohnike of Grand Island, Kathy and Tim Jakubowski of Grand Island and Julie and Rick Metcalf of McCook.
Those also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Corey Mohnike, Eric Mohnike, Michael Voss, Ann Behn, Hannah Voss, Sarah Voss, Jared Metcalf and Jake Metcalf and great-granddaughter, Ella Mohnike.
His parents; a brother, Donald Voss and an infant sister preceded him in death.
Verne graduated from Ashland High School, class of 1944. He entered the United States Navy serving as a radio operator in the South Pacific during WWII.
On March 26, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mary Dunn at St. Mary's Cathedral. The couple made their home in Grand Island where Verne worked for the telephone company for over 42 years.
Verne is a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Platt-Duetsche and American Legion. Following his service in the Navy as a radio operator, Verne continued his love as a Ham Radio Operator; having the call letters WØRVQ. He also enjoyed his yard work, gardening and love for his family.
