Charles Ellis was born in Iowa, a son of Carlisle Ellis and Ellen W Jennings. He had a brother Donald Carlisle. His family lived in Charles City, Iowa where his father managed a farm in 1930 and by 1940 was an office manager. He attended Shattuck School and Carleton College in Minnesota and graduated from Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He received a master's degree from Iowa State Teachers College Charles was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran, serving from 1943-45 and retiring from the Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He married Martha Jane Doucett in 1949 in Scarsdale, New York. They had children Charles, Jeffrey, Christine, Barbara and James. In 1961 he and his family moved to Ames, Iowa where he obtained his Ph.D in biology at Iowa State University. He became a professor of zoology there. He also owned KCHA Radio in Charles City, Iowa They retired to Sun City, Arizona in 1993. \ Charles was survived by his children, Charles Ellis of Bakersfield, California; Jeffrey Ellis of Lubbock, Texas; Christine Ellis of Parker, Colorado; Barbara Holm of Marshalltown, Iowa and Dr. James Ellis of Mahomet, Illinois, as well as nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Carlisle Ellis. |
