Herb Strout, 98
CAPE ELIZABETH -- Herb Strout, 98, of Cape Elizabeth, was born in 1915 and passed away on March 31, 2014, at his home.
He was born in Portland on Aug. 6, 1915, to Herbert and Bertha I. (Lamont) Strout. He attended schools in Cape Elizabeth, graduating from So. Portland High School. In 1940 he married his wife of 73 years, the former Doris Doll Strout and together they raised five children.
His life was continually influenced by his love for electronics. At age 16 he was awarded his first radio license to operate as W1DEO on Amateur radio bands. His professional life started with New England Telephone from Portland to Boston until they insisted he follow 'their rules.' His independent attitude led him to create Community Radio Service, Communications Engineering, Inc. and Portland Marine Radio. He will always be remembered as a respected figure in the local electronics and business community.
In addition to being a visionary, his many passions included music starting with the big bands, fast cars with speeding tickets to prove it, heated discussions and one or more good deals. Herb had also been a member of the Civil Defense.
His incurable love of Sturdivant Island started in his youth where his grandfather fished for a living during the summer months and his grandmother kept house in a borrowed fish shack at the waters edge. In retirement, he and Doris summered for years off Sturdivant Island in their old 42 foot wooden boat, 'Pilot,' retired from piloting ships into Portland Harbor. In 1979 they purchased land on the island where they continued to summer. Herb was known for his less than prudent row boat trips to the island to make winter inspections. In recent years, Herb and Doris continued to make day trips to the Island with the help of their kids, the crew at Handy Boat, generous island neighbors and Annette, their beloved caregiver.
He is survived by his wife Doris of Cape Elizabeth; three daughters, Carol A. Murray of Cape Elizabeth, Betty J. Tarling and her husband John of Cape Elizabeth, Patricia L. Michaud of Boston, two sons, Paul J. Strout and his wife Anne of Cape Elizabeth and Peter G. Strout and his wife Nancy of Cape Elizabeth; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great- grandchildren.
A time of visitation and celebration of Herb's life will held on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. from the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. Those wishing to leave a message of condolence and sign Herb's guestbook please go to www.jonesrichhutchins.
