James Stewart Ussailis passed away on June 14, 2021 at the Center for Extended Care in Amherst. James was born in Boston on September 9, 1939, son of the late James Ignatius and Myrtle Thelma (MacQuarrie) Ussailis. He attended UMASS Amherst from 1967 to 1972 completing an M.S. and completing the coursework for a Ph.D. in Physics while teaching astronomy as a grad student. For 15 years, he worked as a senior engineer in optics and microwave radar engineering. In 1987, he started his own company consulting and later on designing and manufacturing small wireless components and antennas. He also taught physics for a short time in the 90s at the University of Hartford and American International College. Jim enjoyed amateur radio from age 14, participating in many contests throughout the years. He was an active member of the Yankee Clipper Contest Club. In the last decade, he was particularly proud of his accomplishments participating in contests with fellow radio operators. As a group they attained first and second place in the country. He loved a good contest. James is survived by his daughter Catherine E. Ussailis, son James S. Ussailis Jr., and two grandchildren Julia and Ella, and his beloved cat, Lucky-Kat, who he had rescued from a shelter. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife Carolyn May (Marchant) Ussailis. Calling hours will be held at Czelusniak Funeral Home on Tuesday June 22 from 4-6 PM, followed by Masonic funeral rites at 6 PM conducted by members of the Golden Rule Lodge in Wakefield.
