Frederic A. Jenks, 98 years old, died peacefully on April 1, 2014, at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, ME. Born in Lakewood, OH and grew up in the Boston, MA area. Graduated from The Roxbury Latin School in 1934, and M.I.T. in 1938 with a BSEE.
Worked at National Union Radio Corp. in Newark, NJ, where he designed cathode ray tubes, then at Sperry Gyroscope Co. in Brooklyn, NY, Palo Alto, CA and Garden City, LI, NY, during WW II, where he worked on klystron applications, including automatic landing systems. In 1946 he joined Raytheon Co. in MA to work on missiles, air-born radar, automatic landing systems, and air traffic control. Was a consultant to the Air Force Advisory Board for eight years while at Raytheon.
Was a Life Senior Member of the IEEE, a member of the ARRL (amateur radio . W1GEI). WWas president of the West Windsor, VT Historical Society for two years, and did computer work for the town of Brownsville, VT for eight years. Was active in church affairs, with affiliations at local churches in towns where he lived, and finally with the Brownsville Community Church of Brownsville, VT.
His wife, Helen, died in 1986 of bone cancer. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses: Darby E. and Warren W. Mumford of Bowdoin, ME, Patricia L. Jenks and Joan A. Wright of Suffield, CT, and Vicki S. and Michael J. Wells of Oakville, WA; also by his five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Donations to the American Cancer Society or any cancer research organization of your choice, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated.
