Roland Wade Caywood was born on June 24, 1916, in Kansas City, MO, to Roland Blanchard and Edith (nee Rittgers) Caywood. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, class of 1939, after transferring from Kansas City Junior College in his sophomore year. At MIT, Wade, as he was known for most of his life, majored in electrical communications and was a member of the Radio Society. On about December 30, 1939, Wade married Marietta Jane Burtch of Kansas City, with whom he raised a family in Massachusetts.
Wade joined the James Millen Manufacturing Company in about 1941, near the beginning of the creation of the well-known and successful electrical components and equipment company based in Malden, MA. Wade became chief engineer, and later vice president and general manager, of Millen.
In May 1977, the original Millen company closed its doors; however, much of the business was continued under the name of Caywood Electronics, Inc., started and run by Wade. In 1987, Caywood Electronics was bought by Ralph Jannini, KA1FAA, who also acquired the name "James Millen Electronics," which became a division of Caywood in Andover, MA.
Wade passed away in retirement on January 1, 1994, in Burlington, MA.
