Donald Varnum passed away on November 29, 2014 at his Marstons Mills home from heart complications. He was the loving husband of 65 years to Jean H. (Haydon) Varnum. Mr. Varnum was bom July 27, 1926 to Algernon B. and Ethel (Oliver) Varnum in Bourne Ma. He lived and attended school in N. Easton, MA, graduating from Oliver Ames High School. After school he became a radioman for the U.S. Merchant Marine service during WW2 and the Korean War. He worked on several Liberty ships that supplied equipment and personnel for the war efforts. Don worked 31 years retiring in 1986 as Superintendent of Transmission and Distribution for Commonwealth Electric Co. formerly Cape and Vineyard Electric Co. Don along with his wife Jean had many interests. They enjoyed motorcycling, boats and flying. He was a private pilot and member of the Cape Cod Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Assoc. and Cape Cod Chapter of the Quiet Birdmen. In the 70's he enjoyed motorcycling. He and friends would take annual trips to Laconia NH to attend the AMA motorcycle races, which is now known as Laconia Bike week. Don and Jean spent many winters at their home in Naples, FI. In addition to his wife Jean, Don is survived by his 3 sons Michael F. Varnum of Marstons Mills, James H. Varnum and his wife Julia of Seattle Wa., Donald F. Varnum Jr. and his wife Becky of Marstons Mills and 2 grandchildren Ashley and Tyler Varnum of Marstons Mills. A private burial will be held at the Crocker Cemetery in W. Barnstable. |
