Dexter Anderson, age 90, died December 21, 2021 at StoneRidge in Mystic, Connecticut. Dex was born May 31, 1931 in Hartford, Connecticut, to Mabel (Johnson) Anderson and Donald Anderson. He grew up in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where he met his future wife, Nancy Ann Clark, in seventh grade. He earned his bachelor's degree in Political Science at Yale University, graduating in 1953. After enlisting in the army in 1953, he studied Russian at the Army Language School in Monterey, California. Dexter and Nancy married in 1956 and then spent a year in France, where Dex studied at the University of Strasbourg on a Fulbright Scholarship. In 1957, Dexter entered the Foreign Service, where he was employed until 1985. Between tours of duty at the Department of State in Washington, Nancy and Dexter were stationed in West Germany, the USSR, Cameroon, and Switzerland. Dexter then worked for the Voice of America in Washington from 1986 to 1998. They retired to Westerly, Rhode Island in 1998, and moved to Mystic, Connecticut in 2004. Dexter was a lifelong amateur radio enthusiast, receiving his first license as a junior in high school. He was active in several amateur radio clubs and served as a volunteer radio operator at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. He also enjoyed stamp and coin collecting and genealogy. Dexter's love of language and international locations led to many years tutoring English to immigrants in his community. Perennially kind, endlessly curious, and a collector of great jokes, Dexter was universally respected and beloved. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Myrick Anderson, in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Clark) Anderson of Mystic; his sister-in-law Brenda (Solomon) Anderson (partner Reynold Dacon) of Santa Monica, California; niece Carol Myrick Anderson of Lehi, Utah; his niece Erika Anderson Kemmerer (husband Mike) and grand-nieces Heidi Ireland Kemmerer and Sadie James Kemmerer of Santa Monica, California; his cousins Gwen and Holly (husband Rich Shaw) Reid of Hillsborough, North Carolina; cousin Scott Reid (wife Kris Tsang) of Roseville, California; and cousin Robin Reid (wife Cathy Wilson) of Lopez, Washington.
