GORHAM - Dorothy Wood Young, 98, passed away on Jan. 2, 2019, at Springbrook Center in Westbrook.
She was born in Phillips, Maine, on Feb. 13, 1920, the daughter of Edward and Edith (Edwards) Wood.
Dorothy was a graduate of Wilton Academy in the class of 1938 and in 1941 married Philip Young. They made their first home in Dryden where they started their family and Dorothy worked at the post office.
In 1954, they moved to Augusta. She was a stay at home mother while her children were growing up and later worked for the Augusta school lunch program. During this time she was involved as a Girl Scout Leader and volunteered at Camp K-V in Readfield.
The majority of her career was spent working for the Department of Taxation in Augusta until her retirement.
Along with her husband, Dorothy was very involved with ham radio and was one of the first three women in the State of Maine to obtain a ham radio license and operated under W1TGY.
Dorothy enjoyed crafts and was known for her creative and hand-made cross-stitched Christmas cards.
Along with Philip, she enjoyed volunteering for many years for the American Lung Association and was instrumental with incorporating ham radio into the Trek Across Maine.
Above all, Dorothy was the matriarch of her family and loved her children and grandchildren dearly.
She is survived her daughter, Carol Hanken and her husband, Bruce, of South Hiram; and son, Kenneth Young of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Jeremy Hanken (N1KWT) and his wife, Sara, of Gorham, Jason Hanken of Windham, and Katie Veazie and her husband, Chris, of Gorham; three great-grandchildren, Philip Hanken, Haley Hanken, and Hazel Veazie; as well as two nieces, Lorrie Wood of Sicily, Italy, and Linda Norton and her husband, Bill, of Massachusetts.Dorothy was predeceased by a brother, Edward Wood Jr.; son-in-law, Jack Ryan; granddaughter-in-law, Laci Hanken; and her husband of 77 years, Philip Young, in July of 2018.
A memorial celebration will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 76 State St., Gorham, Maine.
