Hancock, NH

QCWA # 38084
First Call: WA4UUX issued in 1976       Other Call(s): AK4L VE1BXC VE1CER VE1RM

I do a lot of remote operating these days. You will probably catch me operating from VY1AAA in the Yukon Territory -- during 2017 I operated the special prefix callsigns XO1X, XK150YUKON or CI1AAA, celebrating Canada's 150th Birthday. We plan lots of contest operations in 2018, and SS CW was great fun despite some aurora in the Arctic.

Our station lineup for VY1AAA, hosted by J, VY1JA, in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada consists of:
160m - Double Inverted-L 60' Vertical
80m - Full-size Ground Plane
40m - Full-size Ground Plane
20/15/10/6 + WARC: 4L Quad at 50'
K3s + Alpha 9500

Most other times I'll be on from K2LE/1 in Vermont. There, we have:
160m - Double Inverted-L with 90' vertical + 660 ft Dual-Wire beverage
80m - Full-size Delta loop with top at 90'
40m - Tower 1 - 4L at 105' Tower 2 - 3L at 65'
20m - Tower 1 - 4/4 at 40/95 Tower 2 - 3L at 65'
15 - Tower 3 - 5L at 55', Tower 4, 4L at 95'
10 - Tower 3 - 5L at 55', Tower 4, 4L at 95', Tower 1, 7L at 115'
Dual K3s + Dual Alpha 87 + Acom 2000A

If you need Vermont on any band, send me an email gerry[at]w1ve.com

Automated QSLing doesn't like different states for the same callsign. So, my physical QSL card is the best way to confirm a QSO with a card in the mail. An SASE is appreciated. If you had sent me an SASE in the past, and you never received a card, I would appreciate an email to gerry@w1ve.com -- send me the QSO information, and, if I can confirm, I'll send the QSL.

I do not answer bureau cards, as I just can't keep up with the QSL load -- I do a lot of contesting. Most contacts are uploaded to LOTW. Again, if you have an issue with a past QSL, please email me. Thanks!

My Ham Radio story...

I am a native of Nova Scotia, on Canada's eastern coast. However, I currently live in southwestern New Hampshire. My amateur radio experience began back in 1976, when I was first licensed as WA4UUX. AK4L, my extra call, came quickly, and I held that call till 1996, when I became W1VE. When I went back to Canada for college in 1979, I took the Canadian Amateur Radio tests and first became VE1BXC. Later, I changed that to VE1CER, and finally to VE1RM.

My interest in ham radio led to a job at ARRL HQ, from 1980-83. I worked in the lab and as a QST Assistant Technical Editor. That was back in the days of Doug DeMaw, W1FB, a fine tutor! If you have the 1982 ARRL Handbook, my picture is on the cover, operating my QSK amp and CW keyboard.

Although I've probably done most things in my "career" as a ham, the most consistent activity has been contesting. I love contests, especially CW DX and SS. I've never had a superstation at home, but I've had the privilege of operating from some of the best in the world: VE1DXA(@VE1YX), VE9DH, VE1ASJ, KY1H/K1TTT, K1ZZ, K1IR, K2LE/1, W2SZ/1, and many others. In the mid-80s I was part of DXpeditions to Sable (CY0) and St. Paul (CY9) Islands as CY0SAB and CY9SPI. Though business and pleasure travel, I had the opportunity to operate as VP2M/VE1RM, KH6/W1VE, 6Y6C, 8P1V, TI5/W1VE and P4/W1VE. We often travel to the Canadian Maritimes on vacation, and you may hear me on as VE1RM, VE9XDX, VY2CDX or VO1WIN, all additional calls I hold. In the US, I also hold club call WR1ST (aka WRIST), which I use in WPX and a few other operations.

Over the years, I've had the pleasure of taking part in many contests operations, which, after a lot of hard teamwork and perseverance, put our multi-op teams into the Top Ten in Canada or the USA. Along with these International DX Contests, I love ARRL November Sweepstakes, and the ARRL June/September VHF Contests... I've been a part of the W2SZ/1 on Mt. Greylock, MA for the past 30+ years. (See http://www.mgef.org.) Most of those finished were as #1 Multiop Unlimited in North America.
