I was first licensed in 1962, at age 17, while at White Plains High School, NY as a Novice, WV2ZPD. I did build the EICO 720 Novice Transmitter, and had a Hallicrafters SX-110 Receiver. I had done MW DX'ing and Shortwave Broadcast Listening before I became a ham starting in 1960. Then in 1963, I obtained my Technician License and call, WA2ZPD. I mainly did operate 2 Meter AM and some 6 Meter AM too. I did join the Communications Club of New Rochelle, NY in that year. I did operate Field Day and in 1964 and 1965, I did operate VHF at K2US, during the New York World's Fair. After High School and during college at NYU, I still operated 6 and 2 Meters AM. In 1972, while in the US Air Force, I started to operate 2 Meter FM repeaters, and after the U.S. Air Force, I continued mostly with 2 Meter FM, until 1979, when I did start to operate HF in the Novice/Tech CW Frequencies, to improve my code speed for the General Class, which I passed at the NYC FCC Office in 1979. In addition to HF, I did operate portable on 6 and 2 Meter Sideband doing mountain operating too. In 1994, I passed the VE Advanced License, and in 1995, the Amateur Extra License. In 1997 I obtained the vanity call, W2CH. (In 1976 and 1977 I had the calls WB7EGN in Phoenix, Arizona, and in Stamford, Connecticut, before returning to NY as WA2ZPD. In January 2004, I operated from Antigua as V25CH. My wife, Marylyn, is licensed as KC2NKU since 2004. ![]()
