Samuel Elmore "Sam" Taggart was born on October 14, 1905, in Wooster, Ohio, to Milton Clifford Taggart and Isabel Marian Snyder. He was pounding brass by the time he was a teenager in the early 1920s, using several calls, including 8DBM. On May 7, 1927, he married Helen Esther Schlegel (1909-1975) of Millersburg, Ohio, with whom he had two children, Samuel Richard and Katherine, also born in Ohio.
Sam had a long career in radio and electronics. He was employed as an engineer by Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company in his early days. He later was employed some 30 years as an electronic engineer by the Civil Aeronautics Administration and its successor, the FAA.
Sam was RCC, ROWH, BPL, ORS, OPS, ARRL, IRE, QCWA, OTC, and OOTC, as well as several local radio clubs. In addition to his technical acumen -- he had numerous technical publications -- Sam was known for being a super CW operator.
Sam and Helen spent their final years in Absecon, NJ. Sam passed away on October 16, 1990, at Atlantic City Medical Center, Mainland Division, in nearby Galloway Township.

W2IU 1905-1990 - How many of you remember Sam Taggart, W2IU, from Absecon NJ. Sam was a CW super man on the NJ nets many years back, and one of AF2L's favorite people. I got to thinking about Sam when I noticed that his call has been reassigned to a station in NY. So I did some investigating and found that Sam passed away in 1990 at age 85. Not sure if we ever observed it here on these pages. Better late than never. Any way, I contacted the new owner and he promises to "handle the call with honor". That is great news.
