On January 27, 2007 of Haddonfield, NJ Age 86 yrs.
Beloved Husband of the late June (nee Cheney). Loving father to Wayne and his wife Nancy of Haddon Twp, NJ, Alan and his wife Carolyn of Berlin, NJ and Bryan and his wife Susan of Cherry Hill, NJ. 4 Grandchildren, Alison, Matthew, Jennifer and Kellie.
A Registered Professional Engineer, Mr. Sammis retired as Assistant Manager, Safety Dept. Philadelphia Electric Company (now PECO Energy) and later as manager, Loss Control for Anjou Company. He was a Professional Member Emeritus of the American Society of Safety Engineers and Past President of the Philadelphia Chapter, Past Vice chairman American Gas Association Accident Prevention Committee. He also was a member and held various positions on the National Council, Public Utilities Executive Committee.
A Volunteer Firefighter for many years, first with Haddon Fire Co. No. 1, and later as a member of Woodcrest Fire Co. Cherry Hill. Wes served as Fire Marshal for Fire District 6, Cherry Hill, NJ and later was elected a Fire Commissioner for District 6. He also served as a member and Assistant Chief for Camden County Fire Police.
During WWII he served with the US Army Air Force as a Navigator holding the rank of 1st LT with the 482nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force on B-17's stationed at Alconbury England. He was awarded the European Theatre of operations Ribbon with 6 battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and Good Conduct Medal. He received also the European African Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Air Offensive Over Europe with awards for Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, European Theatre and Central Europe. A member of the US Air force Reserve he was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict, assigned to the 1600th Transport Wing, Westover Air Force Base, MA.
An active licensed amateur radio operator with the call sign W2YRW he was a member and Past President of the South Jersey Radio Association. He is a Kentucky Colonel appointed by the Honorable Bert Combs, Governor of the State of Kentucky.
Relative and friends are invited to the visitation Tuesday Eve. after 7PM, Masonic Services will be at 8PM at the HINSKI-TOMLINSON FUNERAL HOME 81 Haddon Ave. Haddonfield, NJ. Funeral Services will be Wednesday Morning 11 AM at the funeral home. Int Lakeview Mem. Pk, Cinnaminson, NJ.
