HASTINGS, Fla. - James A. Rooney, 81, of Hastings, and previously of Williamsport, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Rooney. He graduated from Shippensburg University in 1949, earning a bachelor's degree in science. He was the former environmental health director for Putnam County Health Department in Palatka and the Washington County Health Department in Hagerstown. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 202 in Williamsport and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2391 in St. Augustine. He is survived by three daughters, Anne P. Rooney of Orlando, Fla., Jeanne E. Piper of Davidsonville, Md., and Susan M. Rooney of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, James A. Rooney IV, and one granddaughter. Memorial services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Williamsport, with full military honors bestowed by the U.S. Marine Corps. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at American Legion Post 202. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to VFW Retirement Home, 12801 NE 139th Place, Fort McCoy, FL 32134; or to Flagler Humane Society, One Shelter Drive, Palm Coast, FL 32137.
