He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 65 years; sister, Clara Schiel of Supply, NC; and by his beloved daughters, Lynn and Sue, and their families. Bert grew up in Boyton Beach, FL and loved fishing, ships, and the sea. Looking for adventure, he volun-teered for the Army Air Forces Aircraft Warning Services as a spotter at age 15, and then served a year in the Coast Guard. In 1945, he enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in the Pacific arena. After the Navy, he went to Port Arthur College, TX in 1947 to train in Radiotele-graphy, and received his FCC Amateur Radio license (W4MDV, W4ATP, WB4IDO). In February of 1949, he went to work for Southern Bell for 21 years, and then managed the Customer Systems-Circuit Design Group for General Telephone. He belonged to American Radio Relay League, Old Timer's Club, Veteran Wireless Operators Assn, Rag Chewer's Club, Society of Wireless Pioneers, and many others. He loved to fish and hunt, and after retiring in 1986 he and Ruth traveled in their RV to their favorite destina-tion: Las Vegas. He had a lifetime of adventures and was loved by all who knew him. Visitation is Friday, February 13 at 12:00 at Garden of Memories, with service to follow.
