MAYER, DR. PAUL WELLMAN 89, passed away on Monday November 7, 2016. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, went to Case Institute of Technology and Columbia College. He served in the Air-force in Germany during World War II. He received his M.D. from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University in 1954. He practiced Orthopedic Surgery in Miami after training at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, and Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering. He was President of the Alliance for Engineering and Medicine and Biology and of the Miami Orthopedic Society. He was a founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biologic Engineering. He served as Chairman of the Board of Victoria Hospital as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the Miami Heart Institute and Chief of its Division of Orthopedic Surgery. He served a term as Chief of Orthopedics at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. He was a member of The Institutional Review Board of Baptist Hospital. The Paul W Mayer Scholarship for Excellence in Biomedical Engineering was established in his honor by the Alliance for Engineering in Medicine and Biology. He retired 18 years ago and spent his time with his loving family, wife Dr. Joan Mayer and daughters Dr. Victoria Mayer (Todd Miller), Dr. Marilyn Mayer, Dr. Ellen Mayer Sabik (Joseph) and 5 grandchildren who will sorely miss him. He was beloved by all who knew him and he brightened the lives of all his patients as well. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the near future.
